Gustav Stickley's credo for house design favored bands of casement windows rather than the more common double-hung sash.  He believed that they made for better ventilation, and allowed for more glass area while still clearly defining the distinction between interior and exterior space.  Yet he was also influenced by the California bungalows where outdoor rooms like this open entry area, blurred that same distinction between indoors and outdoors.
