1903 NE Hancock Street Pioneering Craftsman That Helped Define the Style in Portland Just off the entry vestibule is the inglenook -- without the expected fireplace. In the Willamette Heights version of this house, these windows would have looked out over the Willamette River valley and Mount St. Helens in the distance -- thus the removal of the fireplace to the other side of the living room. In Irvington, the views of the surrounding trees are more modest. The unusual columns are a trademark of architect Emil Schacht as are the two butterfly joints on the panel behind the door -- the only pieces of applied ornament anywhere in the house. |
