1903 NE Hancock Street Pioneering Craftsman That Helped Define the Style in Portland The breakfast room -- formerly the "butlery" -- was the first room restored by the present owners. They removed 7 layers of wallpaper, dry-wall nailed to the ceiling, and many layers of paint to get down to the original wood. Then applied 4 coats of hand-mixed shellac, rubbed out with beeswax. Then they refinished the original maple floors. This recreated the original look of the room, except for the pantry counter removed in the 1920's. The hand of the wood-loving builder, Harry Nicolai, is clearly at work in this room. |
