"A Perfect Type of New England Style Architecture"

For Ellis Lawrence, the stairway to the second floor was an opportunity for creating visual interest and bold sculptural structural elements.  In this he broke with the Gustav Stickley dicta that stairs should be modest and centrally located to conserve space.  Here space is still used wisely, with space by the stairs for putting on wraps and collecting coats from the coat closet -- but Lawrence still achieved his signature soaring quality and light flooded landings enroute to the second floor.
