"A Perfect Type of New England Style Architecture"

Every master bedroom needs a door to a porch for those warm evenings.  Compare this fireplace with its elegant detailing derived from Classical models found in Colonial houses with the Spartan design in the living room.  Here the more refined version is reserved for the most private parts of the house -- in Lawrence's time regarded as the domain of the wife, as opposed to the male-dominated public spaces on the ground floor.  Sexist though those attitudes may have been, knowing about them helps us understand the aesthetic choices made in the early days of the 20th Century.
