An Archetypal Craftsman Four-Square from 1909 -- Completely Restored While pocket doors were still expected between the living room and dining room (there is still something to be said for the dramatic gesture of throwing open the doors for the guests to display the beautifully set dinner table), the Craftsman ideal had an open flow from entry into living room. Fine woodwork -- typically exquisitely grained flat-sawn Douglas fir -- included built-in seats in the entry and finely crafted stairs and railings. All of the woodwork in this photo had to be stripped of thick coats of paint to restore it to its original glory. |
