Craftsman tradition meets modern innovation in this extensively restored and remodeled home. Built in 1911 for J. Hingston and Dora Smith, the house greets you with over 100 sparkling panes of original beveled glass as you enter.
The current owners, who moved to Portland from Colorado in 2002, loved the house but wanted to shift elements of the layout to better accommodate their needs. They preserved many details including the dining room's unusual bow-front built-in with its original stained-glass doors, and the angled moldings throughout the home. And the new owners brought many interesting items to the house such as the unusual dining room table.
Some changes are subtle, like deepening the stair landing by 16 feet, which did wonders to improve the safety and flow in the house. Others, like combining two bedrooms into a master suite with walk-in closet, or bumping out the back of the kitchen, or converting a sleeping porch to a bathroom, or making a den out of the back porch, are decidedly more dramatic. Still they managed to keep close to the original feel of the house.
Of special note to the many owners of homes with flat-roofed projecting garages is the solution used by the owners. A new single gabled roof was added, providing additional storage a the house level as well as shielding a patio from the street. New garden walls and plantings were added to the front gardens.
