Modest Appearing Bungalow with Dramatic Interior Spaces

This charming bungalow, with it's eyebrow dormers and wide front porch, seems to smile from the street. By 1921, the year this home was built for Nicholas D. & Frances Beutgen, the bungalow form was in its waning golden years, and this home showcases everything that made the bungalow great. From the moment you step in the door, you are greeted by a spacious unfolding of well proportioned rooms that belie the relatively modest exterior. Numerous well placed windows flood the home with soft light and wide doorways allow the eye to wander comfortably through the space.

When initially looking at houses in the area, the current owners, avid golfers who moved to Portland only recently from Santa Barbara, were struck by how perfectly the paint colors and proportions of this home fit their antiques and other furnishings. The grand piano looks built to that space, and the rich patina of the antique grandfather clock in the dining room wouldn't look nearly so splendid against any other color. The dining room chairs were re upholstered to tie everything together. Then a grandchild's highchair got the luxury treatment to match! The owners love the ambience of dinner in this deeply colored room, with dimmed lights and candles reflected in the mirrors.

Up on the second floor, horizontal support beams bring an added architectural depth to the surprisingly large space. Useful and well thought out details, like built-in storage, cheerful colors and well defined spaces make the most of the unusual angles and soaring ceilings.

The comfortable and spacious kitchen has ample storage, wonderful light and beautiful expanses of aggregate countertop, great for breakfasts with the paper. Out in the backyard, the neighbor's garage has been treated to a colorful paint job and a simple but effective bit of decorative detail. The home's own garage has been cleverly dressed as a cottage, making the patio all the more delightful.
