A Shingle Style Victorian Cottage and Irvington's Newest B&B

Earlier Victorian styles relied on a sheathing of clapboards, but in a move to emulate the shingled homes of early New England, in the 1880's architects began experimenting with homes covered almost entirely in shingles.  Oregon, with its abundance of long-lasting Western Cedar for durable shingles was a natural place for the style to flourish.  Here you can see the variety of shingle patterns which provided visual interest.
