Once a Threatened Wreck, Now a Sophisticated Showplace In the hands of a master architect, the Craftsman 4-Square home can have dramatic interplay of shape and surface while still providing the expected woodwork and moldings. Here the view from the entry hall toward the main stairs and the dining room. All the woodwork is flat sawn Douglas fir, standard for the era, and today virtually irreplaceable due to the loss of nearly all the Northwest's old growth forest. While second growth Douglas fir is relatively abundant today, its rapid growth and wide growth rings result in grain patterns that cannot reproduce those of the old growth material. |
