This is one of only two true Mission-style homes in Irvington.  It was built in 1910 by Frederick E. Bowman, who designed and built many fine homes and apartments in the area, but nothing else at all like this one.  The house quickly sold to Mrs. Nellie Walpole, a widow, for $6800, a substantial sum for a middle class home at that time.

The mission styling is not limited to the exterior.  Inside, the home has textured walls reminiscent of adobe, with arched doorways, a classic Mission arched fireplace with tapered chimney, and wooden ceiling beams with decorative braces.

The current owners (she a Portland native, he hailing from Mississippi) have made it a showcase for their extraordinary collection of folk and outsider art.  This is a collection that has been accumulated over a lifetime, with many acquisitions having been made directly from the artists.  The joy and exuberance of this colorful and poignant artwork makes for a home that sings loudly and sweetly of history, love, and the resilience of the human spirit.
