"Re-muddling"

Once a favored roosting site for hundreds of pigeons, with water streaming down the dining room walls, this 1915 Rice brothers home has seen some hard times. It went from a long stint with an absentee owner, to a shoddy re-"muddler" before the current owners discovered it and had a vision of what it could become. What happened next will sound familiar to many old home lovers.

Painting the exterior led to stripping the old paint. That led to the discovery of dry rot. Repairing that required repairing the chimney. Repairing that necessitated repairing the roof. Old photos revealed some hints of the original porch, long since gone. Fortunately, the homeowners met a pair of skilled craftsmen, sometime wooden boat builders, to man the helm of the restoration journey.

As you approach the porch, wending your way up the new steps through the terraced garden, take a moment to examine the columns and their beautiful capitals. These are newly built, replacing badly chosen wrought iron scrolls. Inside, the entire fireplace wall... Mantle, hearth surround, built in bookshelves, are all newly crafted. The wall of built in storage upstairs is new too. Crown moldings and picture rails have been added and restored. Floors have been refinished and buffed, and everything comes together as a comfortable and glowing whole.
