English Tudor Cottage from the 1930's

The owners of this charming 1933 Tudor looked at over 70 houses during a six month period while trying to relocate to Portland.  They were looking for a great compromise between the charm of an older home and the convenience of a newer one.  They found the perfect solution in this home which was in the final stages of renovation when they saw it for the first time.  The history of this house is fairly exceptional in that it was built at the very depths of the Great Depression, in 1933.  The builder, a J. A. Kallstrom, erected a number of similar English Cottage Style homes in the immediate area at this time, evidently taking advantage of the ready availability of skilled labor to create the beautifully ornamental brick work surrounding the front entrance and other nice detail touches.

Upon entering you immediately notice the open floor plan.  While the stair case retains its historic charm, an unneeded wall was removed between the living room and dining room, and now your gaze can flow, unimpeded, from the entryway all the way to the large glass patio doors a the rear of the house and beyond into the garden.  The kitchen, a graceful stretch of granite, is tucked behind the stairs, but is still open to the dining area for smooth flow and convenient entertaining.

The garden is a compact jewel of color, texture, and sound.  The sizable water feature, beautifully placed to be viewed year round from inside, cascades past dwarf pines from Crater Lake, to the delight of the koi below.  A blue heron was spotted fishing here two years ago.
