Stately Craftsman Designed By Ellis Lawrence

This comfortable home was designed by noted architect Ellis Lawrence in 1910 for W. G. Lloyd, who had purchased the lot in March of that year.  It is possibly the first Craftsman Style house that Lawrence designed on his own after he split off in 1910 from the firm of McNaughton, Raymond, and Lawrence to become an independent architect.  Lawrence brought his characteristic restraint and refinement of detail and layout to this home that it shares with the many other examples of his work in the Irvington neighborhood.  Other Lawrence-designed homes appeared on the Tour in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007, several of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The owners are fortunate to have an extensive collection of vintage photos of the home, including some fascinating exterior shots that reveal changes to the front roof lines.  These include photos of a wedding in the dining room and the owner showing off roses in the back yard.  Amazingly, a descendant of the original owner, W. G. Lloyd, was kind enough to bestow these gifts on the current owners -- as well as the original blueprints and deed to the house, which reveals an original mortgage of $5479!
