This many have been the first multi-unit housing development designed by Architect Luther Bailey in Irvington. L.R. Bailey designed nearly 50 houses in Irvington between the years of 1911 and 1925. He is attributed with another 100 in close east side neighborhoods. This prolific designer built this fourplex in the Neo-Classical style, borrowing classic styles from the Ancient Greeks and Romans while adding modern touches. Notice the full wide porch on two stories held by fluted Ionic Columns on this building. The wide Oak main door is original to the house.
The building was constructed by the McAvinney family and was built at the rear of their two lots sharing the space with their stately home. The interiors of the apartments are finished in the Arts and Crafts style popular in the early 1900’s. In each of the four apartments there are many original features including double hung windows with divided light sashes, fireplaces in the dining rooms, enclosed sleeping porches and unpainted trim and doors.
