This is an intact example of the many early Irvington homes built by the
Portland Cottage Building Association in the years from 1892 to 1894.
Henry M. Lambert, owner of the East Portland Mill and Fixture Company, was
also president of the Portland Cottage Building Association and its chief
architect.
This cottage and its nearly identical twin next door were built during the
great bank panic of 1893 and went into receivership to the builder before
completion. This one was sold by the builder to Samuel Roome, a cashier
for Wells Fargo Express. In 1907, it was purchased by Wesley R. and
Margorie Stearns, whose family retained ownership until 1974.
All the original woodwork and natural finishes remain intact and display a
high level of craftsmanship. It may be assumed that they came from the
East Portland Mill and Fixture Company.
The home was placed on the National Register in 1992 as an outstanding
surviving example of the work of the Portland Cottage Building Association and
as a good example of the Queen Anne Victorian Cottage type.
